Hyundai has launched the Bayon, priced from ₹9.99 lakh (introductory, ex-showroom). Three things make it stand out:

  1. The Creta’s engine for less. It uses the same 1.5-litre petrol engine as the Creta (115 PS), but starts about ₹91,000 cheaper.
  2. Smaller than the Creta, bigger boot. At 4,245 mm long it is shorter than the Creta, yet it has a 505-litre boot.
  3. Safety on every variant. 6 airbags, ESC and tyre pressure monitoring (TPMS) are standard. The big-ticket items (Level 2 ADAS, Bose speakers and twin 12.3-inch curved screens) are only on the top HX10.

Below, we go through all seven variants, compare the Bayon with the Creta and the Maruti Victoris, and pick the variant that makes the most sense.

What every variant gets

All seven variants come with:

Variant by variant

The monthly figures are the extra EMI for each step, assuming a 5-year car loan at 9% (every ₹1 lakh adds about ₹2,075 a month).

1. HX2: ₹9.99 lakh

What you get: LED projector headlamps, a digital driver display, rear AC vents, tilt and telescopic steering, and Type-C charging in the front and back.

What you miss: a touchscreen, speakers and a rear camera. It also has steel wheels.

Our advice: skip it. You would end up fitting a touchscreen and camera later, which saves nothing overall and can put your warranty at risk.

2. HX3: +₹90,000 (about ₹1,870 more per month)

What it adds: a 10.25-inch touchscreen, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, speakers and tweeters, steering audio controls, a rear camera, and push-button start with a smart key.

Stop here if: your budget is tight. This is the real starting point of the range.

3. HX3+: +₹90,000 (about ₹1,870 more per month)

What it adds: an electric sunroof, roof rails and 17-inch styled wheels.

Watch out: it is the cheapest Bayon with a sunroof, but it is manual only.

4. HX5: +₹65,000 (about ₹1,350 more per month)

The most important variant, because this is where the IVT automatic starts, with paddle shifters and drive modes.

What it adds: automatic AC, cruise control, a wireless charger, OTA updates and Bluelink connected-car features. It also gets automatic headlamps, a rear defogger and electrically folding mirrors.

What you still miss: alloy wheels and a rear wiper.

Stop here if: you want an automatic at the lowest price.

5. HX6: +₹1.12 lakh (about ₹2,320 more per month)

What it adds: a panoramic sunroof, 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, dual LED projector headlamps and puddle lamps. Inside, you get ambient lighting, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear knob, a sliding armrest, and a rear wiper and washer.

Stop here if: you want the car to feel premium. This is our pick (see below).

6. HX8: +₹1.53 lakh (about ₹3,175 more per month)

What it adds: a 360-degree camera, front and side parking sensors and a dashcam. For comfort, it gets ventilated front seats, an 8-way electric driver’s seat, leatherette seats, and a 60:40 split rear seat with two-step recline. It also gets disc brakes on all four wheels, and the IVT adds an electronic parking brake with auto hold.

Stop here if: you want ventilated seats. This is the only way to get them.

7. HX10: +₹1.55 lakh (about ₹3,215 more per month)

Nearly everything.

What it adds: Level 2 ADAS with 23 features, a blind view monitor, twin 12.3-inch curved screens, an AI voice assistant and Bose speakers with a subwoofer.

Watch out: smart cruise control and highway driving assist are only on the HX10 automatic.

Figures from the manufacturers, as quoted in our video. Rival prices change often.

Where the Bayon wins: it is the cheapest to start, and its top variant is about ₹2 lakh cheaper than the Creta’s and Victoris’s. It has a 505-litre boot, a 360-degree camera from the HX8, and ADAS, Bose audio and twin 12.3-inch screens on the HX10. Since it shares the Creta’s 1.5 petrol engine, it should drive much like a Creta.

Creta strengths: you can have a diesel or a turbo petrol. The Bayon has only one engine.

Victoris strengths: a strong hybrid with a claimed 28.65 km/l, an AllGrip AWD option, and the cheapest automatic of the three.

Safety: the Victoris has a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating. The Creta and Bayon have not been tested yet. Hyundai says the Bayon is built to 5-star standards.

Which one should you buy?

Our pick: HX6

₹13.56 lakh manual, ₹14.96 lakh automatic. It is where the Bayon starts to feel premium, with a panoramic sunroof, diamond-cut alloys, LED projector headlamps and ambient lighting, and you can have it with the IVT automatic.
