The monthly figures below are the extra EMI for each step, assuming a 5-year car loan at 9% interest (every ₹1 lakh adds about ₹2,075 a month).

1. Excite: ₹13.99 lakh (BaaS) or ₹19.50 lakh

What you get: six airbags, ESP, tyre pressure monitoring, a rear camera and disc brakes on all four wheels. You also get a 12.8-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, an 8.8-inch digital driver display, leatherette seats, a powered driver seat, cruise control, 18-inch alloy wheels and the home charger.

What you miss: a sunroof, the 360-degree camera, ventilated seats, a wireless charger and auto headlamps.

Stop here if: you need 7 seats on a tight budget. There’s no compromise on safety.

2. Exclusive: +₹2 lakh (about ₹4,150 more per month)

What it adds: a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, a 360-degree camera, ventilated front seats, a powered tailgate, auto headlamps, rain-sensing wipers and a 50 W wireless charger.

What you miss: ADAS, the bigger screen (it keeps the 12.8-inch one), and vehicle-to-load (V2L) power.

Stop here if: this will be your family’s everyday car. On an SUV this big, you will use the 360-degree camera every day.

3. Essence: +₹1 lakh (5-seater) or +₹1.5 lakh (7-seater)

What it adds: Level 2 ADAS with 11 functions (including adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and automatic emergency braking), a bigger 15.6-inch touchscreen, 10 Infinity speakers with a subwoofer, front parking sensors and a memory function for the driver’s seat.

It also gets V2L, V2V and V2H: you can use the car’s battery to run appliances, charge another EV, or even power your home. V2H needs a separate home unit, sold separately.

Climb here if: you drive a lot on highways and want ADAS, or you want the 5-seater with its 610 litre boot.

What it costs to run every month

These are our estimates. We assume home electricity at ₹8 a unit and a real-world range of about 400 km (MG claims 517 km), which works out to about ₹1.40 per km. We compare that with a petrol SUV of the same size at about 12 km/l, with petrol at ₹105 a litre (about ₹8.75 per km).

Km per month Hector EV, home charging Petrol SUV
500 ₹700 ₹4,375
1,000 ₹1,400 ₹8,750
1,500 ₹2,100 ₹13,125
2,000 ₹2,800 ₹17,500
2,500 ₹3,500 ₹21,875
3,000 ₹4,200 ₹26,250

If you buy on BaaS, add the battery rent of ₹4.90 per km to the charging cost. For example, at 1,000 km a month that is another ₹4,900.

Our pick: Exclusive

₹15.99 lakh (BaaS) or ₹22.00 lakh (full price).

It has all the essentials: the 360-degree camera, the panoramic sunroof and ventilated seats. It costs only ₹2 lakh more than the Excite, and what you get is useful every day.
