Renault Duster Hybrid Variants Explained: Better Than Grand Vitara and Hyryder?
Renault Duster strong hybrid prices from ₹16.99 lakh to ₹19.49 lakh. Evolution, Techno and Emotion explained, compared with the Grand Vitara, Hyryder and Victoris hybrids, with monthly running costs and our pick.
Variant ladder starting ex-showroom prices, our pick in orange
Renault has launched a strong hybrid version of the Duster, priced from ₹16.99 lakh to ₹19.49 lakh (ex-showroom). Three things make it stand out:
- A bigger engine. It uses a 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with two electric motors, for a total of 160 PS. The Grand Vitara, Hyryder and Victoris hybrids all use a 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine.
- No e-CVT. Renault uses its own gearbox, with two gears for the electric motor and four for the petrol engine.
- Better claimed mileage despite the bigger engine. Renault claims 29 km/l, more than the Grand Vitara and Victoris hybrids.
Below, we go through every variant’s price and features, compare it with the other strong hybrid SUVs, work out the monthly running cost against the petrol Duster, and pick the variant that makes the most sense.
Renault Duster Hybrid price list
| Variant | Price (automatic) | Step up |
|---|---|---|
| Evolution | ₹16.99 lakh | – |
| Techno | ₹18.99 lakh | +₹2 lakh |
| Emotion | ₹19.49 lakh | +₹50,000 |
Ex-showroom introductory prices, for deliveries until 31 December 2026. Check the latest price with your dealer.
- All three are automatic. You never need to plug it in; the battery charges itself from the engine.
- The hybrid costs about ₹1 lakh to ₹2.5 lakh more than the 1.3 turbo petrol automatic.
- Deliveries start on 6 November.
What every variant gets
All three hybrid variants come with:
- 6 airbags, ESP and tyre pressure monitoring
- Rear camera and cruise control
- Disc brakes on all four wheels
What no variant gets: ADAS and a 360-degree camera. Every hybrid has only a rear camera.
Variant by variant
The monthly figures are the extra EMI for each step, assuming a 5-year car loan at 9% (every ₹1 lakh adds about ₹2,075 a month).
1. Evolution: ₹16.99 lakh
What you get: the same hybrid powertrain as the top variant, a 10.1-inch touchscreen, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and dual-zone AC. It has 18-inch wheels, but they are not alloys.
What you miss: sunroof, LED headlamps and push-button start.
Stop here if: you want the hybrid’s mileage at the lowest price and can live without the comfort features.
2. Techno: +₹2 lakh (about ₹4,150 more per month)
What it adds: full LED headlamps, a panoramic sunroof, push-button start, beige semi-leatherette seats and connected-car features.
Watch out: the Emotion costs only ₹50,000 more and adds a lot (see below). We would skip the Techno.
3. Emotion: +₹50,000 (about ₹1,040 more per month)
What it adds: ventilated and electrically adjustable front seats, a powered tailgate, a 10.25-inch digital driver display, brown leatherette seats and diamond-cut alloy wheels.
Stop here if: you want the full package. This is our pick (see below).
Duster Hybrid vs Grand Vitara vs Hyryder vs Victoris
There are now four strong hybrid SUVs in India.
| Renault Duster Hybrid | Maruti Victoris Hybrid | Maruti Grand Vitara Hybrid | Toyota Hyryder Hybrid | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Engine | 1.8-litre, 4-cylinder | 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder | 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder | 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder |
| Total power | 160 PS | About 116 PS | About 116 PS | About 116 PS |
| Gearbox | Renault automatic (2 + 4 gears) | e-CVT | e-CVT | e-CVT |
| Claimed mileage | 29 km/l | 28.65 km/l | 27.97 km/l | 27.97 km/l |
| 360-degree camera | ✗ | Top variant | Top variant | Top variant |
| Starting price | ₹16.99 lakh | About ₹60,000 less | About ₹36,000 less | – |
| Top variant | ₹19.49 lakh, the cheapest of the four | Higher | Higher | Higher |
Figures from the manufacturers, as quoted in our video. Rival prices change often.
Where the Duster wins: the most power by far (Renault claims 0 to 100 km/h in 9.6 seconds), the best claimed mileage, and real gears instead of an e-CVT, so it should feel less like the engine is straining when you accelerate hard. It also has 212 mm of ground clearance, and the battery has an 8-year or 1.6 lakh km warranty. Its top variant is the cheapest top variant of the four.
Where the Duster loses: boot space has shrunk to make room for the battery. Renault quotes 544 litres, but that is measured up to the roof. Up to the parcel shelf, it is 372 litres, compared with 518 litres in the petrol Duster, so about 146 litres less. Even so, that is still a lot more than its hybrid rivals. There is also no ADAS or 360-degree camera on any variant.
Maruti and Toyota strengths: their hybrid system has been on sale since 2022, so it has a longer track record and a much bigger service network. Their top variants also offer a 360-degree camera.
Does the hybrid pay for itself?
Assuming you drive 1,500 km a month and petrol costs ₹105 a litre, using claimed mileage:
| Claimed mileage | Monthly fuel cost | |
|---|---|---|
| Duster 1.3 turbo petrol automatic | 18.45 km/l | about ₹8,540 |
| Duster Hybrid | 29 km/l | about ₹5,430 |
| You save | about ₹3,100 a month |
How long it takes to earn back the hybrid’s extra price:
- Emotion hybrid vs petrol Iconic: only ₹1 lakh apart, so about 3 years.
- Evolution hybrid vs petrol Evolution: ₹2.5 lakh apart, so about 7 years.
- At 1,000 km a month, it takes even longer.
So if you don’t drive much, the petrol Duster makes more sense. These numbers use claimed mileage, and real-world mileage will be lower for both. The hybrid’s advantage is also smaller on the highway than in the city.
Which one should you buy?
- Tight budget: skip the hybrid and buy the petrol Evolution DCT at ₹14.49 lakh. It is ₹2.5 lakh cheaper than the hybrid Evolution, and the hybrid would take about 7 years to earn that back in fuel.
- You drive a lot in the city: the Hybrid Emotion at ₹19.49 lakh. It is only ₹50,000 more than the Techno and has the sunroof, ventilated seats and powered tailgate. Skip the Techno.
- You want ADAS, a 360-degree camera or a bigger boot, or you mostly drive on the highway: the petrol Iconic DCT at ₹18.49 lakh.
Our pick: Hybrid Emotion
₹19.49 lakh. If you drive enough for a hybrid to make sense, the Emotion is the one to buy. It costs only ₹50,000 more than the Techno, adds ventilated seats, a powered tailgate and a digital driver display, and is just ₹1 lakh more than the petrol Iconic, which the fuel savings recover in about three years.
