10 things to check before buying a used SUV

A simple checklist to help you spot problems before you pay for a second-hand SUV.

A used SUV can be great value, but a few minutes of checking can save you a lot of money. Take this list with you.

Paperwork

  1. Registration certificate (RC): the name, engine number and chassis number should match the car.
  2. Insurance: check it is valid and ask whether any claims were made.
  3. Service history: regular servicing at the right intervals is a good sign.
  4. Loan clearance: if the car was bought on a loan, ask for the bank’s NOC.

On the car

  1. Panel gaps and paint: uneven gaps or mismatched paint can mean an accident repair.
  2. Tyres: uneven wear can point to alignment or suspension problems.
  3. Underbody: look for rust, oil leaks or damage, especially on 4x4s used off-road.
  4. Cold start: start the engine cold and listen for knocks or heavy smoke.

Test drive

  1. Gearbox and clutch: shifts should be smooth with no slipping or grinding.
  2. Brakes and steering: the car should stop straight and the steering should not pull to one side.

When in doubt, pay a trusted mechanic to inspect the car. It costs little compared to a costly surprise later.
